Vintage was thankfully a little calmer in 2014 than the previous year, with a hot start but quite mild conditions during ripening which allowed for excellent tannin and flavour development. The parcels looked excellent with deep colours and pure ‘syrah’ flavours with nice pepper highlights. Similar to last year, the wine is a blend of Hyde Park Vineyard (72%), the cooler, 45 yr old Westgate Vineyard (3%) and the balance from Rice’s Vineyard (25%). As always, wild yeast fermented, with a variety of fermentation sizes and shapes, some with whole bunches, some destemmed. This year’s wine has firm tannin and great structure to age for many years, and I rate it as perhaps the best ‘Grampians’ we have made in our 11 vintages. Unfined, unfiltered.
